Taiwan Targeting China’s Fashion Market

Taiwan targeting China’s fashion market. Once known around the world for its cheap garment exports, Taiwan is now seeking to leverage a new opening to the China market to make its mark on the Asian fashion stage.

While several Taiwanese designers have been recognized for their work internationally, government officials say the lack of a homegrown high-end design industry is holding them back.

But that could soon change, they say. A trade deal signed in June will make the Chinese market more open to the Taiwanese, slashing tariffs on goods including apparel and punishing mainland copycats of Taiwanese designs.

“The era of mass producing textile goods is gone. We are now counting on creative designers … instead of engineers who have little knowledge about what consumers want.”

The weight of the China market was evident at the annual Taipei Fashion Week show opened last week in a downtown exhibition hall. Several Chinese department store operators were in attendance, and  they are expected to make big purchases

Traditional Chinese Dress – the Qi Pao – Making Waves

Traditional Shanghainese Dress Qi Pao. The traditional qi pao-making service is known as “imperial tailoring”

THE traditional Shanghainese dress(the qi pao) has been making waves in the past few decades. But the tides turned colossal when Hollywood celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Cameron Diaz showed up at red-carpet events sporting the oriental gowns

It’s interesting to note that what started out as a clothing replacement for women of the Han dynasty has been modified over the centuries into a global hit in contemporary fashion, enjoying increasing international popularity for its distinctive fabric, embellishment and collar

“The qi pao is such a gorgeous and unique creation. What matters now is to create more pieces that are relevant in today’s world of fashion,” says Sam Roseman, Shanghai Tang international operations manager and fashion maven who oversees the brand’s imperial tailoring operations

Islamic fashions in Tehran, Iran

Tehran, Iran – Combining fashion and modest dress codes in Iran. Islamic fashion need not be dreary, that’s the message of this collection of Islamic fashions in Tehran. And it’s images like this that the government hopes will show young people that clothing doesn’t have to be revealing to be chic.

Since the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the Islamic regime has required all women to wear the Hijab (Islamic dress codes) in public. However the lack of inspiring domestic clothing designs has made women, especially young girls, turn to western styles of clothing

Western style clothing is favoured by many women – who adjust their modern outfits to suit Islamic dress codes. But the tide is turning in some Iranian fashion houses. With the backing of the government some designers are leaning towards a revival of Iran’s centuries old dress styles

From the Fish Pond to the Fashion Catwalk

From the Fish Pond to the Fashion Catwalk.  A Thai invention brings a fish to the world innovation stage. The picture of a grilled giant-sized fish, paired with spicy dipping sauce and a plate of steamed rice is something many associate with pla nil, or tilapia. It is among the most important farmed fish in the world with its delicious taste and affordable cost. But in Thailand, tilapia has become the next big thing in the world of design and innovation

“Think of it as an environmentally friendly substitute for snake or alligator skin with a similarly exotic appearance,” said Pongsaton Rujira, a man who turns wasted tilapia skin into a unique material. At the showroom of Jerada Leather and Products company in Phetchaburi, where Pongsaton is an executive manager, visitors can witness the stunning collection of products made from a fish usually associated with cooking – from shoes and handbags to unexpected items such as sofas or bikinis.

“I used to work in the department of research and development at a factory that exported tilapia meat, and thought there should be a better way to make use of the skins – 100,000 pieces a month – that were being peeled off and sold off as scrap,” recalled Pongsaton.

“In the past, we sold them to local vendors for 2 or 3 baht per kilogramme, to be cooked as deep-fried fish snacks,” he said. “Then, I learned that salmon skin could be made into leather, and I thought there might be a possibility to do the same with tilapia.”

North Korean Fashion Icon and Trendsetter

North Korean Fashion Icon and Trendsetter. Kim Jong-Il, the North Korean leader, has become a fashion trendsetter thanks to his trademark suits, according to the country’s official website. It claims the Mr Kim, who typically seen in an overall-style zipped-up jacket and matching trousers, usually in khaki or grey, has developed an “outstanding” image.

As a result, according to communist party newspaper Rodung Sinmun, Mr Kim’s fashion sense have sparked somewhat of a global fashion trend. “The reason is that the august image of the Great General, who is always wearing the modest suit while working, leaves a deep impression on people’s mind in the world,” it said.

“To sum it up, that is because his image as a great man is so outstanding.” The article further quoted an unidentified French fashion expert who said: “Kim Jong-Il mode which is now spreading expeditiously worldwide is something unprecedented in the world’s history”.

As well as his matching ensemble, Mr Kim also wears a shapeless anorak and fur out when outdoors. Kim and his father Kim Il-Sung are at the heart of a personality cult bordering on religion in North Korea. The pair are said to be worshipped in the country, with the younger Kim believed to have near magical powers.

Borneo: Organise more fashion and modelling events

Malaysia – “Organise more fashion and modelling events”. More fashion and modelling events ought to be held in the state to encourage more youngsters, especially the ladies, to pursue careers in this lucrative industry. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said such events were also beneficial for the tourism and other related industries

“I believe the exposure gained by participants of such events will stimulate their interest and help them achieve success in the modelling and fashion world which sees an annual income of RM995 billion worldwide,” he said. Dr Chan added that modelling and fashion could create jobs and open up new horizons for budding talents. “Many young women in many parts of the world have become successful models and are earning lucrative incomes,” he said

Dr Chan said this at the Miss Sarawak Model of The World 2010 finale at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club last Saturday. His text of speech was read by Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin. Also present were Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai and the organising chairperson Melissa Wong, who is a former Miss Malaysia Model of The World

Commenting on the beauty pageant, Dr Chan said it was significant because the brain behind it is a former Miss Malaysia Model of The World who had also represented the country in the ‘Elite Model Look of the World’ held in Sanyan, China. “I wish to commend Melissa for sharing her modelling experience and skills with the contestants and the people of Miri,” he said, adding that it was rare to witness such an event in Miri
